Education

I graduated with a BFA in Musical Theater at Syracuse University in 2005. While I loved--and still love--theater, I learned that my passion truly lies in working with young children with special needs. In 2009 I returned to school and earned my MA in Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education at New York University. Since completing the program in 2010 I have worked full time in special education and love every minute of it.

Experience

I have been a special Education teacher for the past 6 years, working with children ages Birth-8. My experience includes working in self-contained classrooms, home instruction, hospital care, integrated settings, and general education. I have also been a private literacy tutor for the past 3 years as well as providing private home-based instruction for children with disabilities. I love working with all young children and have worked with all ability types, however, I specialize in children with severe cognitive and/or physical disabilities including but not limited to: Down Syndrome, FAS, Fragile X, TBI, Autism, EBD, and intellectual disabilities. I am familiar with AAC devices as well as PECS and basic ASL. I believe that all children can learn and that those with special needs are often underestimated. I believe in supporting children and helping them to develop a lifelong love for learning.

Hobbies

I incorporate a lot of music into my sessions as I have seen how much young children love to learn with music. I am always enthusiastic and I will get just as excited about playdoh as your child! I also love to run and am currently training for my next marathon. After recently completing chemotherapy this has become a new personal goal for me. I also love to bake and often incorporate baking into my lessons: learning how to read with recipes, basic math with measuring, and cooking a treat as a reward for doing well.
