Education

Rhodes College: B.A. English Literature and Creative Writing (3.9); University of Mississippi: M.F.A. Creative Writing, Poetry (4.0); University of Denver: PhD Creative Writing, Poetry (4.0) Beginning in high school, I was lucky enough to experience one-on-one help with my studies. I was taught the value of individualized attention, customized learning, and what it means for a teacher to dedicate their time and energy to students who might need a different, more creative approach to a subject. In college, I carried these skills with me. I learned from a wonderful handful of professors who taught me not only the material in the classroom, but the value of what it means to make a difference as a teacher. In this environment, I practiced these skills by tutoring others in reading comprehension and written analysis. I was head of our English honors program and editor of our creative writing review. While working on my master's degree, I was able to teach my own class of students for the first time. I taught at both the elementary and college levels in rhetoric and composition, college-level essay writing, reading and study skills, and creative writing. I also tutored both online and in-person during this time. I was also editor in chief of our literary review, a well-respected publication among independent poetry journals. Now that I am pursuing my PhD, I have been able to take my teaching skills to the next level. I have tutored and taught--both through my university and independently--while in Denver. I work with students from the elementary to college levels on reading and writing skills, meeting them at all stages of the process. I have also served as editor of a highly respected independent literary journal during my time here, and have worked on an additional review that publishes some of the biggest names in the poetry world today.

Experience

I have tutored both in person and online for subjects related to English literature, critical (essay) writing, and creative writing for college-level students. I first began tutoring at Rhodes College, where I studied English and world literatures as well as creative writing. I continued tutoring while receiving my master's degree from the University of Mississippi in the study and writing of poetry. Throughout this time, I have taught critical and creative writing classes at both the elementary and college levels. I have taught for the past 8 years. My courses have included: introductory composition and essay writing classes, early British literature, early American literature, British and American literatures of the 19th and 20th centuries, postcolonial literature, world literature surveys, Shakespeare courses, and nonfiction, fiction, and poetry literature and workshop courses. I have also worked with college students on time- and stress-management skills, organization and planning skills, and study/comprehension skills. I have taught as part of the Writers in the Schools program, where I have had the joy of working with elementary school students on their reading, analytical, vocabulary, and writing skills. I have worked with students in Austin, TX and Denver, CO, and have taught kindergartners, first grade, second grade, fourth and fifth grades, as well as high schools students. Last year, I co-ordinated the WITS program, which involved organizing over 200 students and teachers across the Denver and Boulder areas, publishing a book of student work at the end of the year, and organizing readings to celebrate this publication. I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with elementary school students in creative writing workshops and reading/writing preparatory sessions for 4 years now. I have also had experience leading middle school and high school workshops, where I have been invited into the classroom as a guest speaker. I have worked with undergraduate and graduate level college students both as a teacher in the classroom and as a tutor at several university writing centers. I have substantial experience helping students with college-level essay writing at all stages of their writing process (from brainstorming, to organizing and drafting, to editing and revising). I offer one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions with students of all levels of experience both in-person and online. I am currently working towards my PhD in poetry at the University of Denver. I live in Denver, CO with my partner and our two small dogs.

Hobbies

Working with students at all ages and ability levels is my passion, whether I'm helping a college senior make the final edits to their thesis, or teaching a kindergartner the meaning of a brand new word. Upon completing my PhD I plan to teach either in a private high school or college setting. When I am not teaching or tutoring, I am working on my own writing. My first book of poetry was published in 2016. I also have a chapbook and many individual publications from independent presses and journals. My other interests include painting, sculpting, and fiber arts, as well as book-making and gardening.
