Experience
Hello! I can help you if you are a college student or high school student struggling in your literature classes, or if you are trying to become a better writer. Below you will find a list of my awards, publications and academic presentations to help you decide whether I meet your qualifications. However, what these resume lines don't show is the care that I take with each student to tailor my sessions to the needs of the student. For example: if you are in the beginning stages of a paper we can work on ideas and structuring your paper, or if you have a paper which you want to do final edits on to strengthen the language, we can do that too. I specialize in reading comprehension, academic and creative writing, study skills, poetry analysis and veterans acclimation to academia. I am sincerely passionate about helping students think more critically about language and how it shapes perception and culture. My personal academic research focuses on trauma, poetry and the military experience. AWARDS, HONORS AND PUBLICATIONS -Finalist in the Tennessee Williams/ New Orleans Literary Festival Poetry Contest, 2014. -Finalist for Narrative Magazine’s 4th Annual Poetry Contest, 2012. -My work has appeared in Floodwall Magazine and Narrative Magazine, among others. ACADEMIC PRESENTATIONS -Panel Chair for the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association, Writing Trauma Survival: Learning from Violence and its After Effects in Literature (forthcoming), 2014. -Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association Conference “Documenting Trauma: Spatiality, the Self and the Figuration of the Home in Carolyn Forché’s ‘Nocturne’” 2013. -University of Denver Roundtable Conference “Transforming Modern War Sonnets: A Formalist, Structuralist and Narratological Approach to Yusef Komunyakaa’s ‘Love In the Time of War’” 2012. SERVICE AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH -Board Member and Director for Burning Through Pages, a non-profit organization to promote children's literacy. It is through this organization which I have had the opportunity of tutoring poetry and literature to middle/high school students.
