Private tutor in Denver, CO

Education

I am currently a graduate student at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Writing Department. I also attended the University of Denver for undergraduate and graduated with a 3.8 GPA after only 3 years with my BA in English and a minor in Art History.

Experience

I currently volunteer at 826-CHI, a non-profit tutoring and writing center in Chicago. There, I work with students ranging from ages 6-18. I also worked as a freelance tutor (in the area of academic writing) for undergraduate students while attending University of Denver. I scored in the 90th percentile on the ACTs and have also received excellent scores on both the GRE general exam and the GRE Literature in English subject exam. I enjoy working with students one-on-one to achieve their academic goals because I feel this is the most appropriate way to learn a subject that does not come easily to a student. That being said, I am currently teaching a course entitled "Contemporary Hybrid Literature" to fifteen college freshman at SAIC. Because of the small class size, I have been fortunate enough to teach in a group setting and also offer students my individual attention if need be. In this course, we are exploring creative writing as well as learning how to write academic and critical essays. This qualifies me to teach both creative writing and academic writing simultaneously which has been incredibly rewarding as I am currently pursuing my Master's Degree in both fields.

Hobbies

Attending SAIC has allowed me to explore various areas of the arts. While creative writing is the emphasis of my studies, I have been taking electives in collage art, comic book art and performance art. In my spare time, I am trying to get back to my old hobbies (the ones I had before starting a very busy graduate program). These include dance and music. I have taught in both of these areas as well, as a tap and ballet teacher and a piano instructor. I have also been spending extra time with the elementary school students at 826-CHI, working on a chapbook of their creative writing and drawings. This has brought me great joy and a necessary break from the "serious" sphere of academia.
